Additional Information

My name is Abigail Thomas, and I may be the most determined individual that you will ever meet. While I would take credit for naturally being this way, it is my experiences that have pushed me to evolve beyond the scope of what I had imagined for myself. I am an immigrant from the Caribbean, and I was primarily raised by a single father. He has sacrificed a lot and has provided me with a wonderful opportunity to reach for the stars. So here I am reaching beyond the stars. I am determined, resilient, and a 'go-getter.'

I am currently a student at the Northern Virginia Community College. I have maintained a 4.0 GPA for all completed semesters while working part-time and participating in different activities. I work part-time at a chiropractic office where I take patients through physical therapy and set them up on modalities such as E-stim, ultrasound, and cervical and lumbar traction. I worked in two other physical therapy offices for a few months prior. I chose a health care setting because I love helping others and I wanted hands-on experience, as well as technical skills. I have always had a passion for healthcare and I aim my own dent of an impact.

Last semester, my statistics professor recommended me for a non-profit STEM scholar program for women known as 'Nvolve.' I was accepted and will continue to be a part of this program until I receive my bachelor's degree. Through this program I have monthly workshops which are covered on a weekly basis where I have learnt valuable skills such as focus management, asking for and receiving feedback, preparing for internships and so forth. We also have the opportunity to pursue STEM projects which we complete throughout each semester. This semester I am working on a two-part podcast where my partner and I will discuss the future of telehealth as well as virtual reality in medicine. I also decided to do an additional project on data visualization. I am using the scientific method as well as a data visualization tool known as Tableau to answer the question "How do chronic disease indicators vary across states?" In doing this I have learnt the art of refining a very large data source, as well as how to filter data, make various charts to visualize data, and how to collaborate with my partner and coach on the project. I will have these projects completed within the next weeks, after which I will be working on a biomarker project. I have a burning interest in research, and it would be an honor to attend a top research university.

Not only do I work on projects for Nvolve, but I paint and do arts and crafts as both a hobby and possible business. I also have an interest in assisting non-profit organizations and start-ups and will pursue that venture in the near future. Finally, I have the desire to write books to share my experience with others as well as provide the advice that I was fortunate to have throughout my journey.
