Hi. My name is Kazi Sadat Sami. Although I graduated high school in the USA, I only moved here three years ago. I finished my CIE O levels in Bangladesh in 2020. I have been studying at Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA) for about three semesters now with one goal in mind. To push myself. In the final years of high school, my persistent social anxiety coupled with online classes, prevented me from doing anything meaningful outside of academics. As a result, I left my graduation ceremony feeling empty and alone. I had no friends. I did not exist in Fairfax High School. So, when I decided to join NOVA, I was determined to try new things. Each semester, I explored new experiences that would push me out of my comfort zone. In the summer of 2022, I started working as a cashier at Miniso, a retail store in Fair Oaks Mall, Fairfax, Virginia. My objective was simple to attend classes, go to work, and meet deadlines. Although I had to turn in a few late assignments, I did well. Right before my semester began, I received an email from the American Asian Pacific Islander (AAPI) Connect program. My first instinct was obviously to ignore it, but then a voice inside me reminded me of my goal in college, "Try it." So I responded. Fast forward three months into the fall semester, I was part of both the AAPIA program and NOVA Student Government Association (SGA 2022 - 2023) Annadale. Who knew I was capable of staying busy seven days a week? Who knew I could work 23 hours each week, attend SGA weekly meetings, and study full-time? This semester, I have undertaken a new challenge. Unfortunately, once again we moved houses in the summer of 2023. As a result, I had to leave my job, AAPI, and my SGA Annadale senator position and start my classes at the Manassas campus. But there is no time to grieve. Life moves on. So this semester, I embarked on a new challenge and applied to the NOVA Manassas Math Tutoring Centre. Today, I work 6-8 hours a week between classes getting paid to discuss calculus. But this is not enough. There is more to do in the next semester.
