Passionate, Hardworking, and Resilient are some of the words people would use to describe me. My name is Khayla Deocampo Esporton, a Twenty-three year old student of LaGuardia Community College. My end goal is to become a Psychiatric Nurse and possibly a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner, but I will be taking it one step at a time for now and majoring in practical nursing. A year ago, I was in a dark place on this journey called life. Diagnosed with Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Major Depressive Disorder (MDD), and Anxiety, I was certain there wasn't hope left for me. Little did I know that the deep end I was in would lead me back to a world full of hope and healing. I spent two years of my life in and out of treatment programs, and hospitals, and wasn't cleared to work or go to school till the year 2022. It was a hard journey of healing, but I now know that I had to go through it otherwise I wouldn't know for myself that I was meant to be in the medical field. If you asked me three years ago about going into nursing, I would say I could never picture myself as a nurse. Growing up, I was surrounded by family members that are in the medical field and I’ve seen how hard they worked and the hours they put in. It seemed a little too much for me and it was never an option I would take, but with all the times I spent in hospitals and treatment centers, I realized how important the work everybody puts in to assist a patient through their healing journey, whether it be physical or mental. I was admitted to a facility that only had one genuine caring nurse, and that changed my whole view on nursing. I thought to myself, how could someone heal in this type of environment if there’s no compassion shown? That one nurse gave me hope, the one conversation I had with her changed my life. Here I am now, eager to fulfill my goals and one day be at the other end helping others and showing them that if I can do it, they can too.
