During my junior year of high school, I was encouraged by my father to drop out of school to assist in the family upholstery business. Understanding our financial situation and hardships, I decided to put a pause on my academic pursuits to work for my father. This wasn't an easy decision for me. Not only for the implication that this may mean I would never get to achieve a highschool diploma. But me and my father never had an amicable relationship. My childhood was marked by my father's aggressive attempts at punishing me into subservience. The idea of being stuck alone in his dark and dusty shop was not an easy one to accept. But it was his continued reliance on opiates that was the final wedge that divided us, and after three years, I moved in with my girlfriend at the time and found joy in cooking. All the while festering an alcohol addiction that stunted any plan of furthering my education. It wasn't until the Covid-19 pandemic and the subsequent lockdowns and quarantines that I was finally afforded the time and space for introspective reflection. I recognized how, like my father, my drug abuse was pushing the ones I loved away from me. I saw how I was becoming more and more of an angry unapproachable man who was no longer growing as an individual or a member of his community. I felt shame in how I was leading my life. I spent that year of quarantining gritting and grinding my teeth towards sobriety, emerging on the other a more capable and passionate individual. I now play an active part in my community, volunteering at the local soup kitchen, which my family relied upon when I was younger. I've found passion and enjoyment in my pursuit of knowledge. I'm happily married to a woman who inspires me to persevere through any hardship. I feel as if my soul and being are truly nascent, ready to learn and develop into a more moral human being. I refuse to be defined by my past failures or my turbulent childhood.
